  • Risks - reward v regret

How's your 2024 going? Good I hope. How about today? Hopefully better than Facebook and Instagram are having, as they appear to be down. In 2023 I took a risk, I put Adventure She on hiatus. I needed a break. The reward is the renewed love which I feel for empowering, educating and entertaining through Adventure She. The risk I took is that no one would care about Adventure She any more. Turns out the opposite is true. I've been getting inundated with people pitching stories. So it's time to take another risk. Life is finite, we can only fit so much in to any one day. The question then becomes how to spend one's time? What's truly worth doing, when no moment can be relived? The risk I'm taking is to once again put Adventure She as a priority, to spent some of my 24 hours in a day to help empower, educate and entertain through Adventure She. I really hope you choose to spent part of your day, week, or month, being part of the Adventure She community, whether by reading it, sending in your news, writing stories, telling others how the magazine has (hopefully) helped you in some way, or encouraging others to buy some of the past issues. Hopefully one day Facebook and Instagram will be back up and running and I can keep sharing Adventure She news and other stories there. But, I also hope to make more use of this website, be it in blog format, or online newsletters, or more magazines, or something I haven't even yet thought of. Please do let me know what you would like to see, after all, what you want, matters. So here's to taking measured risks, risks that have been assessed and accepted. With your support, I hope it will be a risk worth taking. Finally, if you'd like to read more about risk assessment and management, why not check out Adventure She magazine's March 2019 issue, as risk was the theme for that issue. Click here to buy the issue for £5 https://issuu.com/store/publishers/adventureshe/issues/adventure_she_march_2019 Or, go to the 'subscribe' tab on Adventure She's website www.adventureshe.com/subscribe and choose 2019, when for now just £10, you will get instant access to all 4 of the 2019 issues, with the themes of risk management and assessment, seize the moment, self belief and resilience. • Why Reflection Is Key To Success

At least we at Adventure She magazine think reflection is key to success. Not just us, but loads of people say so too, way too many to list here. So we've been reflecting on Adventure She. What have we been doing and what can we do better, so we can help empower, educate and entertain more people, especially women? We figured the first step to better work, is seeing what we've done well in the past and what we could have done better. With that in mind we've looked at the topics we've covered to date. We hope you like our summary in the photos below. Remember so far the magazine has been advert free and most of the issues are over 120 if not 130 pages. So if you haven't read our 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 or 2022 issues, why not buy them to today at www.adventureshe.com/subscribe In case you're wondering, the articles in our online magazine are as relevant today as they were when originally published. People still buy Jane Austin and Agatha Christie even though their work was published eons ago, so why not buy Adventure She. Happy reading and happy and safe adventuring everyone. • Issue 19 - Now online

Our December 2022 issue is now online and ready for you to read. We apologise it's late. Our editor tried her hardest to make up for the two months she was away last year, but just couldn't do it. With a theme of self kindness in Issue 18, we figured rather than make her work around the clock and through Christmas, we should practice what we preach and be kind to her. Ironically, the theme for this issue is 'time management', after all, time is so scarce, if we don't manage to control our time, we're in danger of finding we have no time for the good things in life, including adventures. The stories listed below contain what we think are some absolute epics, for there's: packrafting Iceland with Leanne Dyke; setting a fastest known time on the Colorado Trail with Kristina Bodewes; bear watching with Atli Pommer; expat tales from New Zealand including racing the legandary Coast to Coast across the South Island, by Jane Harries; book reviews; our regular what a woman feature won by Bethany (Fidget) Hughes and Lauren (Neon) Reed, collectively known as Her Odyssey; long distance swimming and breastfeeding courtesy of Sophie Ruffles; swimming the English Channel with Girls Alive Surrey and written by Ellie Ames; bouldering in London by Kate Capelli; photography tips from Harri Corp, who also shares her first experience of solo bikepacking; and big news about what's happening in 2023. Don't miss this. It's massive. Remember to read our 2022 issues, you need to buy a 2022 subscription and yes these are still available in 2023. So go on, click on our subscribe tab and get immediate access to all four of our 2022 issues. The themes for the other issues were: taking a step by step approach to achieving goals; the importance of attitude; and self kindness. It's only £12 in total for all four of the issues. So what are you waiting for, go on, subscribe today, after all, where else will you find so much inspiration and motivation for just £12? Inspiration that will hopefully help you to live your best life. Yes subscribe today and enjoy what we think is one of the most empowering, educating and entertaining magazines out there. Happy reading everyone. Bye for now The Adventure She team

  • Happy New Year

  • Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all of you. I hope you've all been enjoying Adventure She's 2022 issues with stories including: Afghan women training for a triathlon; an interview with the United Nations' former number 3 Helen Clark, who had already served three terms as Prime Minister of New Zealand; an entire series of stories about training for and rowing the Atlantic Ocean; ultra running Nepal; houseboat life in Berlin; travelling through Mali; pre-war travels in Ukraine; climbing in Alaska; Nelly Bly; charity hiking in the Sahara; the first ever World Female Rangers week; women of the Tour de France; an obituary of Dervla Murphy; how to become a professional cyclist; hiking mistakes; the Navajo nation; hiking tips; hiking mistakes; from no clue to a mountain biking leader; the adventure revolution and the importance of adventure to health; swimming in Antarctica; bog snorkling in Wales; ultra running in the Simpson desert; skiing across Svalbard; riding a horse around the world' paddling Rwanda to Egypt; the pyramids of Sudan; summiting Colorado's 14ers; qualifying for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships; and last but most definitely not least, the magnificent and most poignant article by Maria Tomas Rodriguez, about the boats used by people fleeing Africa and heading for the Canary Islands. You've probably guessed by now, apart from all of the fabulous people who've written articles for the magazine, it's just me working on Adventure She (I had help I think it was last year or the year before with I think other people doing a first edit of 3 articles), sourcing articles, editing, proofreading, doing layout, finding additional photos, marketing, doing social media etc. I'd hoped to get the December issue out in time for Christmas, but well, to be honest, I'm shattered. Looking at that list of stories from the April, July and October issues, I'm not surprised, especially when you think about all the staff working on some of the big adventure magazines. So given the theme of the October issue was 'self kindness' in other words being kind to oneself, I'm going to be kind to myself and not work through the night and all day this Christmas Eve. Remember if you haven't already subscribed to the 2022 issues, you can still do so at www.adventureshe.com/subscribe The April, July and October issues are of course all online, ready for you to read at your leisure and will soon be joined by the December issues. If you fancy submitting an article for the December issue, please do get in touch, if possible I'll try to squeeze it in. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you. • October 2022 issue

Our October issue is now online and ready for you to read. The theme for this issue is 'kindness', in particular 'self-kindness', for all too often we forget to be kind to ourselves. Worse, instead of being kind to ourselves, we can even be guilty of treating ourselves harshly. As always, the theme is explored through a range of stories, stories we hope that will empower, educate and entertain you. The stories include absolute epics such as Cath Pendleton swimming within the Antarctic Circle, Jessica Mullins and team In Deep Ship rowing the Atlantic, Chelsea Holton ultra-running in the Australian Outback, Ellen Piercy skiing across Svalbard and Sarah Davis paddling through Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan and Egypt. There's also Lucja Leonard's article on climbing fourteeners in Colorado, our editor Jane Harries shares her story of qualifying for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships, whilst Arry Cain shares something totally different, her experience of bog snorkling in Wales. As usual there's book reviews, an UNESCO feature involving more from Sudan and our 'What A Woman' award, which this time goes to Megan Knoyle Lewis, who when in her 60's, rode a horse around the world. Maria Tomas Rodriguez' article is of a different type, for Adventure She isn't just about sport, exercise and the great outdoors. It's also about our world at large. work in documenting the migrant crisis in the Canary Islands, a route which may not get much publicity, but which is extremely deadly. Remember to read our 2022 issues, you need to buy a 2022 subscription. So go to our subscribe tab to do exactly that. For £12 you'll get access to all of our 2022 issues already published and to be published in 2022. So what are you waiting for, go on, subscribe today, after all, where else will you find so much inspiration and motivation for just £12 a year? Inspiration that will hopefully help you to live your best life. Yes subscribe today and enjoy what we think is one of the most empowering, educating and entertaining magazines out there. Happy reading everyone. Bye for now The Adventure She team

  • Colorado Trail and our Autumn Issue

Well our editor, Jane, made it. This last summer she successfully hiked the Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango. The trail is described as involving around 89,000 feet of climbing over 486 miles. Mind you, those feet and miles are measured using the Collegiate East version. That's right, near the village of Twin Lakes hikers have a choice, to take the original Collegiate East trail, or the newer Collegiate West route. The western route is longer, involves hiking at way higher elevations and is rougher under foot. But, it's also said to be way more scenic. Of course she chose the scenic though tougher western option. She figures in total, what with extra distances hiked whilst trying to get lifts into town for resupply, she hiked 500 miles. Don't worry, she hasn't forgotten about the magazine. She's now back at her desk and the next issue of Adventure She will be out in early October.

  • Summer 2022

Our Summer 2022 issue of Adventure She is now online for all of you subscribers to read. In this issue, the July 2022 issue, stories range from charity hiking in the Sahara Desert, to preparing to row the Atlantic Ocean as a team of 4. In addition there's stories on cycling a new trail - the King Alfred Way; making the film Uphill Climb - The Women Who Conquered the Tour de France; an obituary to the legendary Dervla Murphy; book reviews, our usual What A Woman (this time it's the groundbreaking investigative journalist Nellie Bly) and UNESCO features. There's also more hiking mistakes (hopefully you won't copy them),a Q&A with pro cyclist and Tokyo Olympian Sarah Gigante, and a piece by Holly Budge about setting up the first World Female Ranger Week. We can't forget the articles on the Navajo Nation and climbing in Alaska. So go on why not check it out. With all that, we think it's definitely worth reading. In case you are wondering, the theme for this issue is 'the importance of attitude'. Happy reading everyone.

  • Have you read our April 2022 issue yet?

Have you been reading our April 2022 issue? If yes, I really hope you like it. If not yet, then I really hope you subscribe to the 2022 plan which is just £12 for the WHOLE YEAR, so you too can start reading it. That's right, it's £12 for a WHOLE YEAR, not per month, or per week. So if you're paying £5 or £10 a month somewhere else, why not switch to Adventure She magazine? After all, with inflation running away, who wants to spend £60 or even £120 per year, when you can get Adventure She magazine for just £12 a year? Here's the front cover from the April 2022 issue which contains stories of women training for triathlon in Afghanistan, travels in Mali en-route to Timbuktu, more from Helen Clark former prime minister of New Zealand and Administrator of the UN Development Program, ultra running from Everest Base Camp, tips on ocean rowing and lots more including hiking tips and a personal essay on going from a novice mountain biker to a mountain biking leader. I really hope you enjoy this and all the upcoming 2022 issues. #oceanrowing #ultrarunning #ultrarunningnepal #everestbasecamp #helenclark #afghanwomen #triathlontraining #humanrights #overlandtravel #sahara #timbuktu #mali #mountainbikingwomen

  • Mother's day

If you have no idea what to gift your mother for mother's day, why not gift her a subscription to Adventure She magazine? For 2022, it's only £12 for all 4 issues. The first issue will be out before the end of the month and I really hope by Mother's Day. This upcoming issue happens to have a few amazing stories of mums doing extraordinary things, even though they have children at home. One of those mums is Cath Pendleton also known as the Merthyr Mermaid, who kindly gave me (Jane - the magazine's editor) a two hour long interview. Then there's Julia Stevens, who has evolved from a person who was struggling with tackling the bulge and a lack of fitness, to becoming a qualified mountain biking guide. If you're not a mother, don't worry, it's not mum centric. For the record, I don't have children. The point is, whatever our position, there truly is so much we can do. I really hope this issue will inspire all of you, whether or not a mum, or a 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70+ year old, to keep working towards and with the right effort, hopefully achieving our goals. Together, let's keep empowering, educating and entertaining each other. Remember, if you are one of the original 2018 subscribers, your subscription will automatically renew unless you cancel. If you first started reading Adventure She in 2019 or later, please go to www.adventureshe.com/subcribe so you can read the 2022 issues. Any problems, or if you would like to see more of a particular type of story, or if you would like to pitch a story, of course, please do let me know.
